TOWN OF OAKVILLE BUDGET

The town wants to hear from you.  Staff has recommended a 3.32 per cent total tax bill increase to protect existing program and service levels. This would see residential property taxes increase by $33 per $100,000 of assessment. Here’s how you can get involved.

Take our short online survey to tell the Budget Committee which reduction options you support and where you think your tax dollars should be spent. All budget documents and detailed reduction options are available on our budget website for reference.

If surveys aren't for you, then simply email us at budget2011@oakville.ca with your comments.

Check out our drop-in open houses to find out where your tax dollars will be spent, how the increase impacts you, what programs and services may be impacted by reductions, and how our program-based budgeting works. Members of the Budget Committee and staff will also be available to answer any questions.

To appear before the Budget Committee please register at townclerk@oakville.ca or call 905-815-6015. Written comments for the committee can be sent to Town Clerk, Town of Oakville, P.O. Box 310, 1225 Trafalgar Road, Oakville, ON L6J 5A6 or fax to 905-815-2004.

NATIONAL BANK  -   At our last meeting we received a presentation from Jennifer Wagner, Branch Manager of the National Bank located on Kingsway Drive next to our new school.  The bank is offering free safety deposit box for one year, free cashback mastercard and full service financial review and consultation with account openings.  Its time to check out and support our neighbhour.

FORD LIGHTS  -  We are still pursuing the issue regarding the Ford Lights and the reinstatement of the middle lights along the tower closes to Royal Windsor.   We have contacted Terrance Young our MP and requested his assistance in this concern as we have not received a satisfactory response from Ford.  Dave Gittings has also agreed to assist us in our endeavour.  Will keep you updated as we receive answers to our questions.

C4CA UPDATE -   COCA has received the notice below -  C4CA is still pursuing the issues in our area and needs support for the following rally -  Pls check it out.

Join our Rally to greet Premier McGuinty’s visit to Oakville

PLEASE JOIN C4CA AT A RALLY ON FRIDAY FEBRUARY 11TH AT 11am at the Oakville Conference Centre (next to the Holiday Inn at Wyecroft and Bronte Roads).

We want to acknowledge the decision to cancel the proposed power plant and ask the Premier:

1.     To implement the first recommendation of the government sponsored Balsillie Report on Air Quality and designate the Oakville/Clarkson airshed for a pilot study

2.     To establish buffer zones for any future power plants in Ontario

As we move into C4CA 3.0, we ask you to stay engaged with C4CA. We were successful in stopping the poorly conceived plan to build a 975 MW gas-fired power plant too close to homes and schools. During that fight we learned a great deal – namely,

1/ that there are essentially no regulations for the siting of gas-fired power plants in our province."

2/ that the process for evaluating proposals for the construction of these major projects is flawed;

3/ that there are currently no strong regulations or standards for toxic emissions in our air in this province.

We would very much like to work with our government to see that these issues get addressed now. Stay with us. Continue to fight for the health and safety protection of all Ontarians.

The Federal and Provincial governments have begun talks to begin moving towards managing the quality of air in this country. One of the ideas being discussed is the establishment of an Airshed Management System. They are looking for a location to host a pilot project. We would like to be the pilot project and we want both the Liberals and the Conservatives to understand that in Oakville, we want to see our government move towards cleaning up our air now. Not next year. We want to see action now. And we don’t think Buffer Bill 8 should die in Committee.

On February 11th, Premier McGuinty is coming to Oakville for lunch. This marks the first visit of the Premier to our community since before September 30, 2009 – the day the Ontario government announced their plans to build the Oakville Generating Station.

We will meet at the entrance The Rally will last about an hour, just for the time that guests are arriving for the lunch. They are expecting 500 attendees, and the media will be present. It would be wonderful to have C4CA well represented. Bring your signs!

If you have any questions, please call or email your street captain, or anyone on the C4CA Board

Citizens for Clean Air

LIGHT POLE WYNTEN WAY PARK – our councillor Dave Gittings also attended our last COCA meeting and said that the light pole has now be erected and the electrical connection will be done shortly -  Any concerns let me know.

Take care

Laura Mang

Update from the VP of Coca

Next COCA meeting is Thursday February 3, 2011 - 7:30 pm - Velux on Sherwood Heights Drive across from the Hilton

Car Wash application on Sheridan Gardens Drive -  the applicant, Kaneff has requested a meeting with residents of Clearview to discuss the future of the gas station property.  Copy of the email is below.  Please let me hear from those interested in discussing the options available.

"Our automobile use has fallen through and we are back to reassessing our options for compatible uses for the balance of our site.

ATA Architects are preparing a generic plan for an addition, similar to the existing plaza structure, for discussion with the Town and the ratepayers. We would hope to amend our current application to include uses that everyone will be happy with and allows us a better marketing opportunity to finally compete this project."

Landscape Issues (trees etc)  -  We have sent e-mails regarding many of our requests for enhanced landscaping in Clearview to raise our tree canopy.  I have attached the main request we have made.  Copies have been sent to our new councillor, Dave Gittings.  To date we are still awaiting an update. We have also requested information regarding programs that could be placed in Clearview as we now have a new school with an larger gym. There are a few other landscape requests that were also made and still awaiting responses as well.

Driving School issue -  This issue was discussed with our new councillor Dave Gittings - currently we are awaiting his response as to how to deal with this issue.

National Bank visit -  The bank has requested some time at our next meeting to present ourselves and have a question period with the community?

Clearview Church  - The Clearview Church contacted us regarding a fact finding mission regarding needs in our community.  The church has 2 acres of unused land and is reaching out to us for ideas, programs etc.  A church representative will be attending our meeting to discuss what we feel our community would like to see.  Any ideas etc pls let me know.

Car Breakins   -    Just a reminder to all -  Be sure to lock your cars, there has been an excessive amount of car breakins in Oakville recently   also   don't leave your car running in the drive way unlocked, its an invitation for someone to take a joy ride.

COCA e-mail list -  Please let your neighbours and friends know about our e-mail list for updates in the community.  Anyone wishing to be added to our list needs to contact Laura Mang - LMANG@COGECO.CA ,  Pass the word.

The above items will also be discussed further at our February 3rd meeting.

Try to attend

Vote for our Cause

Two Fund Raisers Happening in Our "Clearview" Community.

Playground Equipment

Round 3 begins Monday for the application from the parent council of our new James W. Hill Public School to the Aviva Community Fund.  The council is hoping to receive the much needed funding for a playground to be installed at the new school.  Everyone needs to vote, everyone is allowed to vote once a day for 10 days or 10 votes.  We need everyone to place their votes in support of this initiative.  See the link below.   You do have to register first and then Aviva will send you an e-mail to confirm your registration.  Once that has been completed you are able to vote.  Please get everyone to place a vote.  If the council receives enough votes, the funding can be achieved.

Robotics Sponsorship

Round 3 also begins for the Robotics Team Sponsorship.  The OTHS Robotics team is a group of high school students who compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition each year.  They also need your support.  See the link for their fund below:

Everyone in this community needs to support these initiatives.  Pls take the time to support two very worth while causes.
